Raccoons are not easy to deter. Loud noise and strobe lights will not affect them and the various critter-ridding methods like super high-frequency sounds and vibrations are not effective. It’s not about dissuading them from coming onto your property, it’s preventing them from staying and setting up a den in your attic. This is something you can do easily on your own. There is no need to buy anything but you may want to get a wheelbarrow and a big shovel because you are going to have to do some excavation and shrub and tree removal assuming you have any berry bushes or fruit trees on your property. This kind of freely growing easily accessible food will draw not just songbirds but rats and wild animals to your property. Raccoons are also fond of fruit and berries, especially the rotting ones that have fallen to the ground. They can eat just about anything and have stomachs of iron. Their bowels are filled with one of the most dangerous parasitic bowel worms in the world. Raccoon roundworm. This parasite is deadly and can reproduce more rapidly than it can be killed off with lasers and antibiotics. Many people continue living with raccoon roundworms but life becomes less worth it as the mental and physical anguish sets in. All that needs to happen is for a raccoon to die on your property or to defecate and for you to try to clean it yourself without proper tools and protection.
Thankfully this is not the end. A small latrine of raccoon feces can be removed professionally for a reasonable price and that removal is guaranteed to remove all roundworm eggs on the property. No one wants a loved one to succumb to an incurable parasite that will kill you if you do not have the finances to treat it. Thankfully Ontario offers free health care so that danger is reduced. If you want animals to leave your property then you need to get rid of everything that could be accessed for food, water or shelter by any animal that comes on your property. Takedown trees, remove the pool and gazebo and store your garbage in a tight locking container in a shed or garage. Do this and animals will start avoiding your property intentionally. If this is not enough then you can try removing a nuisance animal with trapping. You leave a spring-locking cage with food inside it. For a raccoon leaving seafood in a bowl of water is the fastest way to catch them.
