Raccoons are a dangerous species. They are very likely to catch something called raccoon roundworm in their life and the number for youth is higher than for adults which means the rates of infection are going up. This means you can assume that any raccoon feces you see on your property is a danger to life and a biohazard. When wet the feces is much less dangerous, however, the roundworm eggs do not die easily, even UV radiation from the over years cannot kill them. You require boiling liquid or steam to kill the eggs. As the feces dry though, the eggs can become air-born. Normally you would need to ingest some of it which is something a dog or small child may do while inspecting it. When it’s dry the eggs can be blown by the wind and infect you through the mouth, lungs and even your eyes. Once infected there is no cure only a way to control some of the worst aspects of the disease. The roundworm parasites can produce millions of eggs, shedding them by the hundreds a day and can, in just a few weeks completely infest every organ in your body. This includes the skin, the lungs the brain and the eyes. The symptoms begin with a fever and nausea then continue to erratic behaviour and brain damage. The patient will fall into a coma and suffer brain death. If this is on your property, or worse, in your attic or your home then you will need to take the cleaning very seriously.
If feces is on your property it can be cleaned relatively easily with boiling water and some bleach in it after its removal. You will want to wear gloves, a face mask and eye protection. Remove the feces after wetting it with powerful disinfectants and then put it in a bag carefully. Mop up anything left and then pour the boiling water and bleach over it. This is not something you can do inside your home, however. If you have feces in your attic you will likely need to call a biohazard cleaning crew. They can provide complete removal of all the damaged insulation, any garbage the animal brought in and the feces and smells. The insulation will likely have to be removed entirely but that gives you a chance to get some fresh insulation into your attic. Whatever you do, do not try to clean raccoon feces on your own without suitable protective gear.
