Raccoons are nocturnal carnivorous mammals. They survive in the same way we do by eating and drinking water daily. If a human goes without water for 3 days they will likely die. The same for three weeks without food. If you do not eat with the relative frequency you will die. The same goes for wildlife. After all, we were once wildlife ourselves. That being said, if you see a starving raccoon on your property they are not only starving. Raccoons are the vector species for rabies, that is they are the most common transmitter of the disease. If you are scratched or bitten by rabies infected raccoon that infection can pass on to you. This can cause hydrophobia, a fear-like sensation that arises when you think about or try to drink water. It follows with lockjaw and odd actions like walking in a circle and mumbling. If not treated quickly it will result in death. So if you see rabies infected raccoon on your property you will need to call the humane society to take it away. Otherwise, you may be putting your pets, neighbours and children in the community in danger. Raccoons offer a great deal of danger through their activities. They have a stomach worm that does not affect them but can kill a human or animal in short order. If you have raccoon feces on your property you should not attempt to clean it yourself. The only way to kill the raccoon roundworm eggs is by using boiling steam. Heat is the only way to kill raccoon roundworms.
In the event, you are seeing a great number of raccoons on your property you may want to think about how close you are to a natural area like a park or a ravine. Living in non-urban environments leads to more desperate raccoons. With not enough food for all of them, they must seek it out and often in our garbage cans. Raccoons are desperate and violent creatures. They may look cute at first but do not approach them. If they are regularly on your lawn you may want to build a fence to keep them out. Otherwise, there is little you can do but hire someone to clean up whatever mess they make and then move on with your life. Focusing too much on wildlife on your property is a problem. They will not go away and there is little you can do to stop them. They are protected in Ontario so you cannot harm them and other than raccoons and skunks there is no way to trap them.
