A raccoon is not an especially survivable creature in that it can survive for long periods without food or water, they have so much access that it’s rare for a raccoon to starve or die from a lack of hydration. Mice can go for three years without water. Like a human, they can only go 3 or so days without water and about a week without food depending on the animal’s current fat content. While raccoons, in desperation can eat almost anything and have never-ending access to food from garbage cast on the street to the millions of unprotected garbage cans in the city. Raccoons are very good at finding food so this specific incidence is unlikely to occur. Raccoons are just too good at finding food and can eat animals that have been dead for weeks as well as rotting vegetables and even raw food like meat, rancid milk and dairy and raw chicken and pork. They can essentially eat anything and if they find your property to be plentiful they will stay permanently often finding a home under your deck or shed or even in your attic. Raccoons are singular except for the short time they spend with females during baby season. Raccoons do not interact and a raccoon grazing in another raccoon’s territory may find themselves attacked. But in the same instance, the new raccoon may be much bigger than the current occupier of the territory in which case the smaller raccoon would be changed off.
The dangers of having a raccoon on your property are plentiful. They can enter your attic and defecate and urinate in it while destroying the insulation and even chewing electric wires. They will drag your garbage into the attic and when you do finally get it out there will be the cost of remediating your attic which is not cheap when a wild animal was in it. Raccoon feces is also highly dangerous. Raccoons have an immunity to it but no other animal does. The parasite that comes from their bowels is called raccoon roundworm and is a very dangerous parasitic infection that is currently incurable. Having raccoon feces on your property or especially in your house in a ventilated attic can cause danger of infection. If you have this feces on your property do not try to clean it on your own. This can rick your infection. Call a professional company that can use a full-face covering respirator and boiling steam over one hundred degrees celsius. Without this, the roundworm eggs can survive direct sunlight for years.
