Raccoons are smart, mischievous animals that seem like they’d be fun to have around. There are thousands of videos on the internet that show raccoons living indoors. But is it legal to have raccoons as pets? Not in Canada. Raccoons are considered wild animals that should be left outdoors. If you want an exotic pet, check what is allowed in your province and acquire the pet by legal means. If there are raccoons on your property and you need help, give us a call. We provide humane raccoon removal services in Toronto and beyond.
It is illegal to keep raccoons as pets in Canada. You can neither keep a wild animal captive nor relocate one. This includes raccoons, foxes, opossums, and more. The only exceptions to the rule involve scientific research, conservation, zoos, and game hunting preserves, as long as there is permission from the government. If you found a baby raccoon or an injured animal, contact your local wildlife rescue and they will take care of it. Raccoons are not domesticated animals like cats and dogs. They are cute, but they are not pets. The best thing you can do is admire them from afar and protect their natural habitats.
Why are Raccoons Dangerous?
The raccoons you see outside are likely to have roundworm, an intestinal parasite that can be fatal to humans. Roundworm eggs are passed in the animals’ feces, which can then become airborne and accidentally inhaled. Roundworm may cause nausea, loss of coordination, blindness, and even coma. In Ontario, one can assume that one in two raccoons have roundworm, so it is best that we keep our distance. These are wild animals that do not visit the veterinarian. If you get too close, they might also bite or scratch you, which may cause serious illness or injury.
If there are raccoons in your area, it is best that you keep your property off-limits. Secure your garbage cans with bungee cords and keep the yard well groomed so that you do not attract them. Pick up fallen fruit, mow the lawn, and feed the birds sparingly. For best protection, make sure that your roof is well maintained. Fix gaps in the sides of your roof and strengthen the soffits that touch the roof below by adding mesh. Cover your roof vents with a 16-gauge, galvanized steel mesh so that raccoons do not break them off. Then, finish excluding the home by getting rid of any gaps in your deck.
